If you use LayoutPanels then you should add them to RootLayoutPanel, not RootPanel.
It's mentioned in the Layout Panels section of this document: http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/doc/latest/DevGuideUiPanels.html I've spent lot of time myself to find this out.
