Have you considered using SVG ? In terms of possible effects, there is virtually no limit to what is possible to achieve. If you look at the SVG spec, you will get a good idea of the available features: http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/text.html http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/filters.html#AnExample
I am developing a GWT library for SVG (http://localhost/vectomatic/ libgwtsvg) which provides a complete GWT front-end to the browser's SVG engine. Though the lib is still very young, I think an app such as the one you describe could be developed with it.
