Ben,
Not sure what you mean by the not upgrading because plugins, you can
download the required browser plugin files separately at
http://gwt.google.com/missing-plugin/MissingPlugin.html and install
them at will.  I'd recommend moving to 2.0 if you can, although you'll
have to change over to ClientBundles which are almost the same..

As for your actual problem, no images do not have to be the same
size.  Maybe you can post how you are creating and displaying the
images?
