Hi Chris, just apply a z-index Style to the WidgetContainer (Layer). Remember GWT want it in camel case (zIndex) Z-Index only determs which layer is over the other.

You alway have to implement the "doWhatIMean"-function yourself ;-) A LayoutPanel uses absolute positioning. That is great because you can control anything (great für application/ dialog style positionings), That is poor because you must control nearly everything (poor for classical flow controlled web page). Other positionings like "static" or "fixed" do have their entitled use cases, too. FIrst think about what you need, that choose the panel.
