Make sure you have all the Eclipse files in Subversion. The Eclipse files (.project, .setup, .launch) are filtered out from the Project Explorer view.
You shouldn't have to create a 2nd workspace. The advantage of a 2nd workspace is that you can easily dispose of it and start over. I think there may be some issues getting the plugin to recognize an imported GWT project, but they may have been resolved with a recent GPE version.
