GWT is a tool that google uses for his products. GWT is not intended to make money, but it is a necessary tool to develop other apps that make Google earn more money.
By making it open-source, google reduces the ammount of money spent on the GWT, since more people can contribute to the project (writing code, finding bugs, creating new features).
