I was using IE7 after the first few steps. I didn't observe a difference in behavior between IE6 and IE7. IE8 leaked as well, but I didn't subject that version to the same science - our customers are all IE6 & 7.
I didn't observe any difference in performance just from using the application - no scientific measurements, although the code I added into onDetach doesn't look terribly expensive.
