So I ended up grabbing the client timezone:
private String getClientTimezone() {
Date now = new Date();
String timezone = DateTimeFormat.getFormat("ZZZZ").format(now);
return timezone;
}
and pass it to my action and on the server side
Calendar cal = Calendar.getInstance(TimeZone.getTimeZone(timezone));
to convert the GMT time to the client timezone.
