GWT does not require a persistent connection (actually, this can even be an issue with IE<http://code.google.com/p/google-web-toolkit/issues/detail?id=4723>). The fact that you see one being used is only driven by your browser and your server somehow "negotiating" what to do (that's just HTTP at work).
