Thank you for your responses. Looking through the CSS, we DON'T have any descendant CSS selectors.
However, I DO see the same performance degradation in IE 8 on the cellTable showcase sample here: http://gwt.google.com/samples/Showcase/Showcase.html#!CwCellTable. So it does seem to be a problem with my environment/browser and not my implementation. What's weird is that the row highlighter keeps up great with FireFox, it seems to just be a problem with IE 8 on a Windows 7 machine. Other people here running IE 8 on windows XP did NOT see the slowdown. It seems to be very much browser dependent. At this point I'm thinking it's yet another weird thing about Internet Explorer. I'm not sure there's anything I can do at this point, save for upgrading to GWT 2.2. Thanks for your help!
