Well, the Showcase sample uses new CheckboxCell(true, false) for a selection cell, so maybe you could make it work? http://gwt.google.com/samples/Showcase/Showcase.html#!CwCellTable It uses DefaultSelectionEventManager.createCheckboxManager() to handle selection instead of a FieldUpdater, as that's now the preferred way to do it.
