I think the "recommended" way to do this in GWT 2.0+ is to use a 
DockLayoutPanel or a LayoutPanel and use setWidgetSize (or 
setWidgetLeftWidth in a LayoutPanel) to resize it dynamically (and benefit 
from a smooth animation).
