I like the idea of providing a visual indicator that only some of the parent's children are checked, but I think every application I've seen leaves the parent unchecked if any child is unchecked. I would recommend looking at some of the UI/UX experts opinions on this instead of asking "us coders". Steve Krug (http://www.sensible.com/) and Jakob Nielson (http://www.useit.com/) would be good starting points. Their recommendations are based on studies and data ... pay attention to them.
