I had exactly the same problem. In my case it was due to the twitter 
bootstrap template, which includes the html5shim:

 <!--[if lt IE 9]>
<script src="http://html5shim.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/html5.js";></script>
<![endif]--> 

Seemed to be an issue related to the handling of select/option elements in 
html5.js.
