Ok so the problem reappeared despite my comment above.

This time  the following procedure helped:
1) Stop DevMode server process
2) remove the IntelliJ Gwt Cache (including war/<appname>/hosted.html)
3) AND clear the browser cache!!

NOTE that ONLY removing the IntelliJ Gwt Cache (including war/<appname>/hosted.html) did not do it.
