You don't want to save the UI state in the URL. The reason is that if you do so, the browser would have two history entries if you check and then uncheck a checkbox. Now when you hit the browsers back button you don't go to the previous place (the previous selected menu item) but you just undo the last checkbox action. Thats probably not what you want.
