With CellWidget + Cells you can do something very similar on a per widget
basis. Cells are used to render HTML based on some state and CellWidget is
used to bridge between the Widget system and cells.

Something like:

MyWidget extends CellWidget<MyWidgetState> {

  class MyWidgetState {
      // all the widget state variables that the Cell will use to render
the widget
  }

  public MyWidget() {
    super(new MyWidgetCell(), new MyWidgetState());
  }

  public void setXyz(...) {
     getValue().xyz = .... // getValue() returns the state object.
     redraw();
  }

}
