I think I figured it out. Turns out the differences where not entirely random. All the appointments with the wrong time are after March 11, the daylight savings change.
I read another thread about this and I think this applies to my phone calendar. It appears that the calendar in my phone is not able to simultaneously display the correct time for both Daylight and Standard time. I expect this problem to go away after March 11. If not I'll re-post. For reference, my phone is Sony Ericsson w810i with the latest firmware installed.
