I just posted the original message a few minutes ago. I only noticed after my post that a different number of bytes were transferred after each "failed" sync attempt. Further investigation indicate that a different number of messages (in the range of 80 to 90) were being deleted from my phone each time. I guess the large number of messages changed on the google side were causing a time-out or something which was simply reported as a sync protocol error. I'm all good again. Thanks.
