Thanks for your help. My N71 is (obviously) the Japanese edition, which I'm sure has a special firmware to enable Japanese text input and other Japan-specific features. I've run into other quirks so that isn't implausible.
I cleared the calendar on my phone and applied recurrences to all the events on my google calendar, and was then able to sync correctly. I'm not sure if it'll work correctly if I try to sync back up to google, but for now, things are as they should be.
