Thanks for that. I suppose the sensible thing to do is to enter anniversaries/birthdays on Google Calendar and sync them down to the handset. I ran a couple of tests with that and found that entering a birthday as an all-day recurring event with an alarm in Google loses the alarm on the handset. You have to set it as a recurring meeting (ie between specific times) to keep the alarm. (It also appears on the handset as a recurring event rather than an anniversary, but that's just too trivial to get upset about.)
There's more to this than may first appear, isn't there?
