At this point, I've tried all the devices listed and adjusted several
of the slides on each. I've tried with the built-in mic and a logitec
headset plugged into the cannon plugs but I still get the squeal in
the foreground.  I've tried a M$ usb headset, but it's not even
detected--though it works on my other Ubuntu computers just fine. I'm
leaning towards stray voltage from a defective mainboard, but I just
want to rule out any issues with software before I call Sylvania--who
may no little about the computer they put their name on.
