Slowly whittling it down. It appears I used the wrong option for
burning the CD in Burn. Should have used Copy/Disk Image, which
recreated a Bootable CD on the second attempt.

Still fairly fraught, assorted crashes during the CD boot, but
eventually I had gOS on-screen. It wouldn't allow me to install onto
the HD without going via the Desktop. The installation process
trundles on even as we speak.

Hopefully the HD version will sort itself out. The crashes or should I
say stumbles dropped into a black screen with white writing and seemed
to be related to the a network manager/ethernet and the expectation
that bluetooth would be present. It isn't of course, but USB is,
although so far gOS hasn't recognised my USB mouse. The stumbles
eventually timed out and the launch process continued
