Yes you can play games on it, but no you cant run any old Windows game
on it.
You can run any game on it written for Ubuntu Linux (or at least for
Debian the Linux branch on which Ubuntu, and thus gOS is based. For
example there is a Linux version of DOOM 3.
In truth, you often need a bit more technical know how to get some
games running.
That is because most games are not commercially supported, they are
most often free.

There is also limited compatibility with windows Games, through the
inclusion in gOS of Wine (version 1.0) but your mileage may vary. Some
games work very well, others not at all, and some work with small
quirks. Just google for "linux gaming wine".

A good start would be to look at this list of games supported by Wine

Of course you can put any background you want on the desktop, the best
thing about linux is that you can infinitely tweak and customise it.
gOS is in fact just a "customised" version of Ubuntu Linux in the
first place.
