Ubuntu/Canonical has said that they no longer intend to support officially, versions for PPC powered machines, but some of the older versions are built for that architecture. gOS development (in line with Ubuntu) say there are no plans to develop a PPC version. This means that G3 iMacs are supported but they are not officially supported by the latest editions of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu. Does it matter? If ageing machines cannot be used because official support for their native operating system no longer exists, those machines are nothing but large paperweights ready to thrown in the rubbish skip. If Linux can offer an alternative then many machines which would be destroyed in First World countries can find a new lease of life in Second and Third World countries, so IMHO yes it does matter. But if manufacturers look at the short term and only produce PC architecture because that is what runs the "latest and greatest", we'll all be poorer because it cuts down on choice for consumers. Having said that, I can understand gOS and Ubuntu developers cutting down the range of architectures for which they develop if the devs are not there but it still seems to me we're being held to hostage by the likes of AMD and Intel. -- Graham Todd --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "gOS Linux" group.
