My main gOS menu locks up after installing packages too. However, I
have added a second (different) menu to the bar at the top of the
screen. Now after I do a package install the default menu still locks
up, but the second menu that I added works just fine. This is a decent
work around until the devs get this bug squashed. No need to log out
and back in. Hope that this works for you.
