If X works fine on the computer and you have an unusual resolution
like that, often it's the bottom of the screen that gets cut off,
especially when making configuration changes. If you cannot see the OK
buttons or whatever (for example when configuring Evolution) you can
use the standard Linux option of using the alt key and the left mouse
button and dragging the window higher up. That should solve the
problem.
Also some games will complain that it's not a standard resolution, and
fail to start when invoking them from the menu.
To fix this, open a terminal and invoke the game from the command
line, and use gamename   --help.  Often they will have a parameter you
can set there, and then it should work from the menu afterwards again.
For example:
gamename   --screen 1024x600
Usually then the hidden config file in your user directory will save
that for future sessions
