If X works fine on the computer and you have an unusual resolution like that, often it's the bottom of the screen that gets cut off, especially when making configuration changes. If you cannot see the OK buttons or whatever (for example when configuring Evolution) you can use the standard Linux option of using the alt key and the left mouse button and dragging the window higher up. That should solve the problem. Also some games will complain that it's not a standard resolution, and fail to start when invoking them from the menu. To fix this, open a terminal and invoke the game from the command line, and use gamename --help. Often they will have a parameter you can set there, and then it should work from the menu afterwards again. For example: gamename --screen 1024x600 Usually then the hidden config file in your user directory will save that for future sessions
