I believe that you can fix the session errors by editing the .desktop
file in /etc/xdg/autostart/ for google gadgets. Change the Exec= line
in there and add --sm-disable at the end of it.

For startup, if you mean so that they do not have to enter a username
or password on the gdm login, then check this page:
