You said "because sometimes it downloads old versions" It clearly
states on the AMSN site that (only) OLDER AMSN versions are in the
Debian repositories, as used by Ubuntu (which is based on Debian), and
thus by gOS. That they only release older versions of AMSN the oficial
way is their problem!

You simple have been brought up to expect things to work like windows,
and are trying to apply that to Linux, that simply is a bad habit!

All installation methods bypassing the debian installer (apt-get with
Synaptic as GUI) should be considered experimental, and if something
is not working with them, you should ask the provider of the
alternative solution why his installer is failing, and why he fails to
to simply provide a repository with the current version.
Yes, at the very least you should give a linux executable you have
downloaded "executable rights", or Linux will treat it as a document
instead of an executable, but that does not mean the downloaded
executable (installer) will work correctly if it's programmer did not
write the installer to work through the installer as it should have,
but simply "dumps" files at several places in the filing system (some
locations may not even exist, because of differences between
distributions).

It's possible for a software distributor to create a repository (or
repositories), and put the latest version of his software there, so
that the normal installer can use it, and he can use a "web interface"
to start the installer, so why re-invent the wheel? You -can- get a
"surf the web for software" way of installing, but what the AMSN
people are doing seems to be buggy.

gOS already has a messenger "pidgin", that can support multiple
protocols, not only MSN. I doubt gOS will exchange pidgin for AMSN,
but if the AMSN people get their act together it should be trivial to
install the latest version.
