Well, the slider is indeed invisible, and I have a fully updated gOS 3, I ran the update manager to check just now, but the good news is that the volume control can still be used by clicking on the '+' and '-' buttons above and below the volume bar, and you can also drag the invisible volume knob. I know because I started "alsamixer" from the terminal, and you can see the master volume control going up and down life while manipulating the volume control.
although you can switch the "minimixer" (as it is called) to control microphone level instead of master volume control, it is a very cumbersome way to control all aspects of the audio mixer, so I regularly use the "alsamixer" mini shell application, as it gives a full overview of your sound-card's capabilities, which is essential for all non trivial applications.
