gOS 2.9 is incompatible with updates that install Ubuntu 8.04 parts,
and the "upgrade" will go wrong in a way that ends up without any
installed kernel. This means that there isn't a kernel to start, so
your OS is effectively broken.

Only one solution I know, and that is to completely re-install gOS
again, using a Live_CD.

gOS 3 final does no longer use the Ubuntu repositories for its updates
and upgrades, so it fixes this problem.
