Yeah, I was just about to give the same answer as patmeister, I can
confirm it works. For some reason it seems installing thing not trough
Synaptics can change the gconf-editor settings. Maybe the gOS people
should look into why that happens.

Even a freshly installed versions isn't completely "up to scratch",
just run the update manager, and you will get dozens of upgrades, you
should do these before trying to reload the gOS theme, and when you
reload it, first switch to a different theme, then remove the gOS
theme with synaptics, add the missing sources in :
System Preferences>Preferences>Software Sources, the load back the
updated gOS theme, reboot, and switch back to the gOS theme. The new
theme should have a "small green ball" as the drag-knob for the volume
control.
