install gnome-alsamixer, and see if you can use it to unmute/control
the audio level.

If you mean that you can't see the volume control "knob", then yes it
is invisible, but you can still control the volume, with the up and
down triangles, or manipulating the invisible knob.

Its a bug in the "theme", you can switch to another theme to fix it,
or you can remove and reload the (fixed) theme, search for "theme" to
find more instructions.
