Installing gnome-alsa-mixer is not a "magic-fix", instead you use the alsa-mixer program that you can now find in the menu to try to find out if there is a mixer setting that is muted that you can un-mute to get sound.
Under Linux, in principle all available drivers are simply already included, an automatic detection setting should have detected which sound system is in your system, and should have selected and enabled the correct driver for it automatically, then the alsa sound system will use it to provide a sound system, and the alsa-mixer program should have been given the exact details about how the internal mixing system of the sound chip works, so it can control all aspects of it. The gnome-also-mixer is simply a graphical interface (GUI) for the alsa-mixer. You can also open a terminal and run "alsa-mixer" for a non GUI interface.
