You need to have a working "composition manager" running on your
system for the border of the dock to be automatically restored.
Normally gOs uses XCompMgr for this task, as it runs on any video
hardware. If you have tried to enable Compiz, but did not succeed, and
in the process removed XCompMgr  you have to restore XCompMgr  to get
the border removal back. Search here for "compiz" for more info.
