the updater simply uses the same internet connection as anything else, so I suggest that something else is going on. perhaps the configuration file of the update manager is damaged, or is missing the right URL's to the repository where the updates is coming from.
I suggest checking the; gOS>System Preferences>Administration>Software sources program, look in the tab "Third party" software whether a URL http://software.thinkgos.com/ gadgets main exists, and whether the check-mark is placed before it. Also check the contents of the "Updates" tab. The first two options in the "ubuntu updates" section should be enabled.
