SiS is another company like nVidia and ATI, only somewhat smaller.
The "extra drivers" are in reality the non-open-source (closed-source,
or "non-free", as the FOSS movement calls it) drivers that are
released by some Video Chip makers, like Nvidea and ATI, they are
comparable with the drivers for Windows Direct-X for Windows in that
they are optimized for 2D and 3D acceleration. But for legal (and
technical) reasons Good-OS cannot just incorporate these "non-free"
drivers in the OS as the default drivers, they must be manually
installed by the OS users. But the open-source drivers that gOS uses
for (the same) video cards also normally support most of the 2D and 3D
acceleration functions, so they also can be used with programs like
Compiz.
The only real limitation gOS now imposes on the Video system is that
it artificially limits the maximum resolution to 800x600, because of
safety reasons. Because it is technically still possible that some
older monitors are damaged when "over-driving" them, so it defaults to
a maximum of 800x600, that is, until you set the actual monitor you
are using with the "screens and graphics" program, you can add this
program to the "others" menu with the menu editor "main menu".
