Your computer has sufficient RAM but may not have sufficient hard disk space (especially if you intend to dual boot - in which case you'll have to defrag your Windows partition before installation). The message you are getting is, on the face of it, from a badly burned and read disk. Before spending too much more money out, try getting a disk drive cleaning utility. If the laser is covered in dust, you may not get a clean burn which in turn cannot be cleanly read. The drive keeps on trying to read it, then gives up, which is the usual reason for it taking time. However, your disk boots up on another computer, so for the time being assume you have a good burn and a bad read, so get in touch with your local LUG (Linux User Group) to see if they can help you. You can get their UK webpage at: http://lug.org.uk/ but they are all over the world - there's bound to be one near you. Some have their own usenet group but you can keep up to speed on where they are, who's in charge, etc by looking in the UK magazine "Linux Format".
