In principle the BIOS updating process does not (cannot for that
matter) use the Operating System, but (normally) uses a boot floppy,
how to create the boot floppy is another matter, but it can be done
equally well with Linux as with Windows.
You need to contact gateway for instructions on how to flash your
BIOS, but more importantly to ask if any of your problems will be
fixed at all with a new BIOS.
