Thanks guys, but no go :-/

If trying to "su -", I'm prompted for a password. Hitting ENTER ->
"Authentication failure". I tried "test", no go.

If trying ALT-F2 -> gksu nautilus -> Run -> file manage, and trying to
open /boot/grub/default in a text editor, error because of some code
page issue.

I don't remember doing this, but maybe I set a password to root at
some point. Is there no way to boot without this and reset it?
