If it is in a repository you can install it through Synaptic, just
search for it.
You can add more repositories with the "software sources" menu.

almost all free Linux software has been packaged for the Debian
package manager, and can be found in repositories.
gOS primarily uses the Ubuntu repositories, but you can add others
too.

Synaptic is actually just a graphical front end for the apt-get
installer, just like add/remove is, so long as you use either
synaptic, add/remove, or directly control apt-get through a command
line terminal you can safely install stuff, as apt-get does all the
book-keeping, and makes sure your system is free from installation
conflicts and problems. So it is for example possible to add software
directly from a .DEB package, but it is not the safest solution, only
using software from a trusted repository is much safer, and guarantees
the software you install is compatible with your system, and is free
of malware.
