You mean that you couldn't find it in Synaptic? Did you have all repositories enabled in "software sources"? You -should- be able to install flash through Synaptic, not from macromedia, but from the Ubuntu repositories, if not something is wrong.
Bypassing Synaptic can be done, but it can cause problems, but as long as the software is installed though the package manager, it should not be too much of an issue.
