Try de-installing (with Synaptic) your kaffeine player, then re-
install it.
Or better yet, try installing a better player like "VLC", ("VideoLAN")
its available in Synaptic, just search for "vlc", and install the
package that is simply called "vlc".

Does not explain the sudden death of your sound system, it might be
just software, so you could try to re-install "libasound2" with
synaptic, the "alsa sound library", while your at it you might want to
install a better sound mixer application, so install "gnome-
alsamixer", at the least you have more control and overview over what
is happening.
It might also be flakey hardware, if you have a discrete sound-card
(not built into the motherboard) you might try re-setting the board
into the card-slot. Do you still have sound under windows?
