Do you have enough RAM, you can have just enough so that gOS will boot, but not enough to also run the installer (when that happens you also wouldn't have enough RAM to run a fair sized application like Firefox). gOS 3 needs at least 256MB. Alternatively, I have also seen CD readers that were able to read the disk well enough to boot it, but could not handle the demands of the installer, sometimes burning the CD at very low speeds (4x speed) helps, but I experienced one drive myself that just couldn't handle it, only after replacing it did the install work. Oh... a tip, it may help to turn the screen saver off before running the installer, especially when running on low memory.
