Found the answer: reinstall the gos_theme. Followed the instructions to add the gOS repository in http://groups.google.com/group/goslinux/web/essential-tips-for-beginning-gos-3-users?hl=en and also 'Fix the gOS 3 theme "missing knob" problem'.to get the lost background image back.
