if you do not see the plugins listed in the plugin manager of Firefox, or if (for exanple) YouTube claims Flash is not installed, the the flash player plugin is NOT properly installed. In which case (as told in the FAQ) you should completely remove all traces of the previous install, then install again, using the procedure described in the FAQ.
The install is done in two parts, if the first part is done, but the second part fails the plugin is NOT installed, but the APT-GET installer (that Synaptic uses) only "knows" about the first part, and thinks the install has been completed, thereby flaunting all further attempts of installation. The new install method Adobe forces upon us is less reliable than the old one, so broken installs are more common than previously.
