I had a similar problem I was given a Dell E1505 with a broken mother board -- apci doesn't work with Windows. I use "Puppy" to help me diagnose pc problems, and found this: http://help.ubunti.com/community/BootOptions these is a 5 page "how to" under documentation. I followed it "exactly" and the Dell now boots and runs both Ubuntu and gOS. The Ubuntu does not work with the Dell wireless card, but runs very well with the Airport101 USB wireless adapter. I use the most current version of both Ubuntu and gOS, with updates thru today.
