Hi Jens,
>Dear Sir or Madam,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] is a mailing list for people interested in the
mail-archive service. This mailing list has approximately 50
subscribers.
>the follow and more SPAM mails where transmitted over your
>mail-archives!!
Mail-archive receives email and turns it into HTML pages. It doesn't
transmit email (spam or otherwise). I think you are suggesting that
your email address, appearing in an archived message, was captured by
spammers using address harvesting programs ("spambots"). Presumably,
after mining your address, the spammers spammed you.
>This spaming is unwished and strictly forbidden. (I cite your faq's
>"Spamming is expressly forbidden, and also illegal").
As is hopefully clear from the FAQ, I think such a practice is
dispicable, and I have used every legal and technical countermeasure I
can think of. Unfortunately, the countermeasures are not foolproof
against spambots; I can usually tell when harvesting has occurred by
measuring spam sent to my personal email address and also to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I suspect some harvesting occurs directly on
mail-archive, and some secondarily, i.e. google indexes mail-archive web
pages, and addresses are harvested from google. I now get several
spam mails a day in my personal account, and gossip gets one every few
days (which are filtered out).
What can be done? I have no further countermeasures in mind
(suggestions are always appreciated). I think the only way to be sure
to starve spambots is to close the service entirely. That's a
possibility if mail-archive turns out to more of a liability than a
benefit overall, but I don't think we are at that point yet.
>I demand to forbore this transmittion in future
As explained, mail-archive does not transmit email. Please direct your
complaint against the source of the spam. I support any and all
efforts you take against spammers.
> and to DELETE my email account from all your mail archives.
Unfortunately, I cannot do this. First, I have no way of locating your
email address in all the millions of archived messages. Second, and
more importantly, I will not edit archived messages unless required by
law. This policy is partly to do with maintaining archive integrity,
and partly to do with liability laws in the United States; it is
important that I do not exert editorial control over the contents of
the archives.
In summary, I am very upset if your address was harvested in
mail-archive, I hate spammers at least as much as you do, but I will
be taking no action in response to this incident. Spammers have once
again assumed the number #1 threat position against mail-archive's
continued survival, now that some other problems facing the service
have been resolved.
Cheers,
Jeff
