Mike,

I think if Gerv excludes people who make anti-LGBT statements, he's pretty much
barring 90% of the messages coming in. It hurts to see anti-LGBT sentiments,
but we need to hear from people who are stating how they feel and why.

I will argue that while the *sentiments* are being carried into the activities,
*support* for those sentiments are not. Gerv is not *supporting* anti-LGBT
beliefs by letting the messages go through. Comparing to
Nazis/Socialists/Fascists/pedophiles and ad hominem attacks are not allowed
because they do not follow "Interaction Style", which among other things, bars
personal attacks. As the interaction style says, "Don’t expect to agree with
every decision."

And yes, every mention of "the gay agenda" irks me. I've seen lots of
disturbing things and had to personally invoke Godwin's Law 4 times in directed
discussions. But I defend their right to say it.

Gerv,

I don't think this goes nearly far enough. There's still content coming
through that's openly anti-LGBT. That's simply not acceptable. (CPG:
"support for exclusionary practices must not be carried into Mozilla
activities.")

I appreciate that you're trying to not censor a difficult discussion, but
we have the CPG for a reason, and I'd ask that we clearly adhere to those
in any moderation policy.

Here it is; comments welcomed.

Gerv

Hi,

My name's Gerv; I'm the moderator of the mozilla.governance forum. We are
currently getting a lot of email from understandably angry people about
what happened with regard to Brendan Eich. I am attempting to moderate the
discussion in a way which allows everyone to have a voice, while keeping
things at least vaguely civil.

There are not many moderation rules; they are:

* No posts making comparisons to Nazis, Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot etc. Google
for "Godwin's
  Law".

* No comparisons of particular behaviour with paedophilia.

* No posts whose sole content is effectively "me, too". See
http://input.mozilla.org/ .

Inside those guidelines, everyone gets one top-level post to give their
opinion, and anyone who engages constructively with others is welcome to
contribute and make replies.

If you are getting this email, it's because your post didn't meet one or
more of the above guidelines. We have no wish to censor anyone, and we
think the above give ample scope for expression (including expressions of
anger and frustration). We hope you will consider resubmitting a modified
form of your post and then listening to those who reply to it.

With thanks for your appreciation of the difficulties I am facing here,

Gervase Markham
