Let me look at what happened from another perspective, including
the one of an old mozillian who was at Netscape. I think Mozilla is,
quite surprisingly, facing the kind of duality Netscape faced: it
was a corporation, with market goals, but based on an Open Source
community and its culture. Mozilla is also a corporation now, needs
to behave like a corporation in a very aggressive market environment,
but has to deal with its very specific culture coming from the open nature
of the project. It is hyper-difficult for an organization to
balance two so different cultures. It is very hard to look reliable
in the corporate world - for instance in negotiations with a major
telco - when your organization looks flat and has multiple public
voices. I am sure Mozilla will succeed making it happen, but it won't
be easy and won't come at no cost. It's a quite complicated managerial
mission...
